A Rod? A Phillie?

so you may think we’ve lost our mind. there’s no way the phils possibly are in the arod sweepstakes. in their little pea brains, they aren’t. but they could be.
the phils had a 90 million dollar payroll in 07, which ranked them 14th in the league. you take out garcia, lieber, iguchi, mesa, barajas and nunez and that gives you $28 million. there’s about 10 million in the expiring contracts of rowand, lohse and romero. remove $2.5 million in the shrinking salaries of gordon and moyer. we add $6.4 in raises for utley, myers, burrell, and helms. it nets out to about $34 million. what are we forgetting? arbitration for one, that’s only eight players for two.
starting with arbitration, there’s only one place to start: ryan howard. do we pay him right now? do we wait? this is the phillies. we wait. + 1 million over last year. let’s add 4 million for madson, werth, victorino, hamels, condrey, dobbs, ruiz, and bourn. hey, we’re up to 18 players at $29 million less than ’07.
so do you do a deal with arod?
well, if the budget does not go up, then no.
let’s compare.
With:
C: Ruiz, Coste
1B: Howard
2B: Utley
SS: J Roll
3B: ARod
Util: Helms, Dobbs, Geoff Blum ($1 million)
OF: Burrell, Bourn, Victorino, Werth
SP: Hamels, Moyer, Eaton, Kendrick, Carrasco/Bargain Bin
RP: Myers, Gordon, Condrey, Madson, Zagurski, Geary, Matheison, Alfonseca ($1 million)
Without:
C: Ruiz, Coste
1B: Howard
2B: Utley
SS: J Roll
3B: Pedro Feliz (7 million a year)
Util: Helms, Dobbs
OF: Burrell, Bourn, Victorino, Werth, Rowand ($10 million)
SP: Hamels, Moyer, Eaton, Kendrick, Lohse ($7 million)
RP: Myers, Gordon, Condrey, Madson, Jeremy Affeldt ($4 million) JC Romero ($4 million), Matheison, Alfonseca ($1 million)so would you rather have Lohse, Affeldt, Romero, Feliz, Rowand, or ARod? if you have any hesitation, what if you raise your budget $10 million and keep a Lohse and a Romero?
it’ll NEVER happen, but i say, f*** it. go get arod. i’ll buy a jersey t-shirt and pay a couple extra bucks a ticket. just to not see wes helms, it will be worth every penny.
