Feel the Excitement

Musings on yesterday’s highly lackluster playoff game from Geoff with a G

1. If Bourn is not going to steal, why use two substitutes (not to mention two of your left handed batters when you know they have a righty closer) to reach one base, first in this case. We were watching and talking about stealing the whole time. Okay, so Hawkins throws hard. Fine, can’t steal first pitch, can’t steal second. 0-2 is a dead on pitchout count. Once he went after him 0-2 the first time, it was evident they would not pitch out. Should have gone after the 0-2 fouled off pitch (run on the 4th pitch of the at bat). Didn’t do it. We called the 1-2 pitch out. That was obvious. Run 2-2…guess what, the hole would have opened at second base when Kaz went to cover (assuming they weren’t using the SS to cover which I would have given Hawkins velocity). You could have created something. Next time, Iguchi should have been moving…again ball would have gone into right field if the 2B was covering the bag. If not, you have a guy in scoring position with 2 outs. Ridiculous.

2. The crowd was a joke. This is the problem with corporations and ticket brokers. You have people who are not true die hard fans and they don’t really care. My friend has tickets to EVERY game. Full season package. He was told to sit down yesterday by other fans when he stood up to cheer. Ridiculous.

3. I knew this would happen after Sunday…they celebrated like they won the world series. They achieved what they wanted to by winning the East. The Rockies, celebrated on the field, but it looked a lot like a regular
season walk-off win celebration. That was it. They remained focused on their goal of winning a championship. The Rockies had a plan at the plate (make Hamels throw a fast ball, lay off the change up). It worked for
one inning and that was enough. The Phils look like they were still hungover. Hopefully, Charlie rips them a little bit, or J-Roll gets together with those other clowns at the top of the lineup and does something to re-focus
them. Also, get Victorino out of here. I want Werth and I want Burrell at 3 breaking up the two lefties. Make it a challenge on Clint Hurdle to decide who to use…otherwise, it is Hawkins to face the righties, then Fuentes to face the lefties, then Corpas to face the righties to end it. How much easier could it be?

4. How does one of your hottest players, Jayson Werth, not get to swing a bat at all yesterday? By the way he was in the on-deck circle to hit for Nunez if they had a base runner…ah, that would have meant Coste plays
3B in a tie game with just one catcher left on your bench as your last pinch hitter. Nice managing.

    1. dyerjg Says:

Bourn not running was awful. He had to go to put pressure on their catcher, whom by the way has only thrown out 2 of his last 32 batters. Speed is key to us making things happen. That ball in the hole, runners at the corners. Then we have a game. The only reason for him not going could have been that the guy was quick the plate, still no excuse for the fastest guy on our team.

On another note, was that the Braves TBS announcer doing the play by play…. horrible. I hate Ted Turner.
