iverson1.jpg

this the first live blog of cityofpain. chances are, it’s going to suck worse than billy king’s contract negotiations.

Pregame

first miller lite in, should have been molson. ho, canada.

why does iggy look like carl weathers at the end of rocky I? get some sleep young blood.

why is someone’s mom saying “that andre igwadola is so well-spoken” right now? and where is the love for reggie evans? if samuel dalembert is the best shot blocker in the league, doesn’t that level of bs mean reggie evans cured polio?

1st quarter

hey, we won the tip. it’s a start.

well, this has gone to shit. halloween, a live blog and a girlfriend do not work.

notes from the porch:

3 millers in, pizza on the way…good times.

jason smith is steven hunter with skills, ambition and hustle. there’s a joke there, but i’m not sure what it is

2nd quarter

more notes from the porch:

kyle korver likes the back door…

how in the world do the raptors have no free throws? me thinks there’s some ole going on.

maybe samuel dalembert is the best shot blocker in the league. he just made chris bosh look like steven hunter.

oh boy…new sixers pregame show. that’s worth the $100 it’ll take me to get to the game with my girl.

i miss todd mccollough…like the deserts miss the rain.

chris bosh is better than you…or me…or any sixer. if he’s not an all-star, the nba is gay. oh wait…

halftime

hooray. billy king spouting off bs. i can’t wait.

Phillies Free Agent Analysis - Third Base

Oct 30, 2007 in Phillies

Dobbs, Helms and Nunez

Adding a solid third baseman to the Phillies roster this season is the #2 priority behind starting pitching at this point. Wes Helms is not your every day third baseman, and neither is Greg Dobbs for that matter. Nunez is gone so count your blessings there. Here are the potential candidates:

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees) - forget it. I’m not going to even bother analyzing this. If we get him (and there is probably a better chance of Garrett Reid NOT cooking up another line of black tar heroin), then we can celebrate at that point. Until then, get the spoon, the lighter, and the diseased needle ready.

Mike Lowell (Red Sox) - Career averages: .280, 23 HR, 97 RBIs, 80 runs, 57 walks. Probably the most attractive option, but I can’t see the Red Sox not retaining him after the season he just had or, more likely, the Yankees going after him hard core. The Yankees will be able to throw more money at him than the Phillies probably will, and they need someone to replace A-Rod. He’ll be 34 going into the season, but has expressed interest in playing in Citizens Bank Ballpark where he has thrived in his career. He was also a Phillies fan growing up. We could desperately use his right handed bat in the lineup and he gives us a decent defensive option. Should command at least $10 million a year for four years, but can he duplicate the season he just had? Chances of the Phillies signing him: less than 20%

Pedro Feliz (Giants) - Career averages: .258, 20 HR, 77 RBIs, 64 runs, 28 walks. A dark horse if there is any in the market, but not at all a top five option. Actually, if we sign this guy I may cover myself in army ants, chop off my penis, and jump off of the Walt Whitman bridge. Feliz bats right, will be 33 going into the season and has six years experience. Could definitely be available if the Giants pursue A-Rod like many think they will. Not an unbelievable hitter, but doesn’t strike out a lot and is a much improved defensive player in recent years. He is probably not a better option than anything we already have and could ride another team’s bench. Chances of the Phillies signing him: -10000%

Garrett Atkins (Rockies) - Career averages: .302, 22 HR, 109 RBIs, 89 runs, 65 walks. Atkins is essentially David Wright, minus the homosexuality. The Phillies would have to trade with the Rockies to get him, and I’m not so sure if that’s going to be a possibility considering their success this year. The Rockies have continued preliminary discussions with Atkins on a long-term contract, but are not close to an agreement. Problem for the Rockies is that even if he continues to develop, he probably won’t be with the Rockies for the entirety of his career because they have a guy named Ian Stewart currently earning his wings in the minors and will most likely be ready for Coors in less than two years time. Atkins is a right-handed hitter and is going to be 28 next season. He will command 10 million/year easily. Phillies chances of getting him: I have no fucking idea.

Hank Blaylock (Rangers) - Career averages: 273, 26 HR, 97 RBIs, 90 runs, 60 walks. This is the trade that seems to be the most realistic at this point. The issue with Blaylock has been his health. This past season he only played in 58 games because he had a RIB REMOVED at the beginning of the season, although when he came back he was still better than anyone we had at the position. He is only 27 and has above average career numbers, although he’d be another left handed bat in the lineup. He’ll most likely command $6-8 million/year when he becomes a free agent after the 2008 season, assuming he stays healthy and maintains his career stats. He is also a two-time all star.

So which way will they go? It’s gotta be Blaylock because I just can’t see the Rockies giving away what could be the best third basemen in the NL. He’ll command less in salary and we’d have to give up less to get him.

A Rod? A Phillie?

Oct 29, 2007 in Phillies

The Phanatic Likes A-Rod

so you may think we’ve lost our mind. there’s no way the phils possibly are in the arod sweepstakes. in their little pea brains, they aren’t. but they could be.

the phils had a 90 million dollar payroll in 07, which ranked them 14th in the league. you take out garcia, lieber, iguchi, mesa, barajas and nunez and that gives you $28 million. there’s about 10 million in the expiring contracts of rowand, lohse and romero. remove $2.5 million in the shrinking salaries of gordon and moyer. we add $6.4 in raises for utley, myers, burrell, and helms. it nets out to about $34 million. what are we forgetting? arbitration for one, that’s only eight players for two.

starting with arbitration, there’s only one place to start: ryan howard. do we pay him right now? do we wait? this is the phillies. we wait. + 1 million over last year. let’s add 4 million for madson, werth, victorino, hamels, condrey, dobbs, ruiz, and bourn. hey, we’re up to 18 players at $29 million less than ‘07.

so do you do a deal with arod?

Viking Quest

Oct 29, 2007 in Eagles

Brooks Bollinger!

Two more games against Dallas. A game against the Giants and the Redskins. A Sunday night game at the Patriots. Even games against the Seahawks and the Saints still left to come. Does anyone still feel good about the Eagles chances at a winning record? Is there a better chance of Magic Johnson beating AIDS? Yes.

Let’s take an honest look at what the Eagles have accomplished before the win today in Minnesota:

  • 14th ranked red zone offense in the NFC, yet the #2 offense in total yards in the NFC
  • Two touchdowns in 15 chances in the red zone minus the Lions game
  • 5th worst scoring offense in the NFC; this is worse considering we dropped 50+ vs. the Lions
  • #2 in the NFL in sacks allowed
  • 13th in the NFC in kick return yards, last in the NFC in longest return (29 yards)
  • 12th in the NFC in rushing attempts per game (big problem)

There were some good things to come out of the win today (Westbrook getting the ball, two more sacks from Trent Cole, Greg Lewis getting hurt)….but I’m still not sold. They just do not seem to have enough offensive talent, primarily at wide receiver. You can look to last year’s rise from the dead as hope for this year, but we don’t have a feisty, hungry veteran QB coming off the bench with nothing to lose. We don’t seem to have a coach who is willing to commit to the run, and we don’t have any veteran leadership who seem willing to stand up and recognize the urgency and desire to win. The Vikings are bad, real bad. This needed to be a double digit win. (more…)

I Know It’s Early But…

Oct 18, 2007 in Flyers

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZB0oGsPudA]

…has anyone been watching the Flyers? Holy Shit. This is one cohesive team right now. They look better in all 5 games so far this year than they did in any of the 82 games they played last year. The first thing I notice: speed. Gone are the days of dump and chase North American hockey, replaced by lightning quick counter attacks meshed with the precision of an OJ throat slice. Maybe it’s the new metro-sexual fitting Reebok jerseys (which I love by the way) or maybe it’s the fact that we dumped losers like Calder, Zhitnik, Ratje, Sandersson, and replaced them with players like Lupul, Briere, Hartnell, and Timonen. That might have something to do with it. The second thing I notice: zero lapses in intensity. Look, I fully understand that we are only five games into the season, but considering the Flyers started out last year 1-7, this has to catch your eye, no? This team that won a franchise low 10 home games last year is 2-0 so far at the Wachovia Center . This team has the look of a team that is not going to be giving up too many two goal leads going into the third period. They just keep coming at you and are continuously on the offensive. We score more than you, we win. Or how about: goaltending. Is Martin Biron the answer to our goaltending woes we’ve had since the days of Ronnie Hextall? So far he is. How can you argue with a 4-1 record, 1.81 GAA, .939 save %, and one shutout?

How did Paul Holgrem manage to rob other teams blind with these trades?
